Why Contesting In Traffic Court For Traffic Tickets Can Actually Hurt You

By Jessica Lucas

When you get a speeding infraction or other ticket while driving generally people will pay the citation or you go to traffic court. When someone automatically pays the ticket it doesn't even give one the chance to contest the violation as you are trying to move on with the issue because you are admitting you are guilty.

Contesting an infraction in court in many instances can really help because many infractions when fought properly are usually reduced to a lesser traffic offense and even thrown out. But are there circumstances that going to court can actually hurt you?

The first way to hurt yourself by going to traffic court will involve you being careless with the words you use. You can have a nice defense, but you can undermine it by admitting your guilt in the courtroom. An excuse as to why you did whatever infraction is not a good defense strategy. This bad word choice will get you the full fine on the citation along with other negatives banded together with that infraction.

Another way to disserve yourself by choosing to go to court is to forget and not go. If you exercise your right to go to court, then you are legally bound to appear at that court at the appropriate time. When you do not appear,You might put yourself in more trouble because the judge can issue a warrant for your arrest. What this means for you is if you do not take care of it after the bench warrant is issued, at any time in the future when and if a police officer runs your drivers license and sees you have an outstanding warrant for you they can take you into custody right then.

If for any reason, you forgot about the court date it is best to get this taken care of as soon as possible.

Going to traffic court and fighting infractions can be very helpful, but only if you show up at the correct date and time. Or else it is going to hurt your driving history.
